This months “Preferred Product” is presented by Dr. Cynthia Willems and is called “Solensia”. Solensia is an injectable medication that is being hailed as breakthrough in pain relief for cats suffering from Osteoarthritis. How is Solensia is different from more traditional oral non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and oral steroids? Solensia is the first and only once-monthly monoclonal antibody therapy that controls feline osteoarthritis (OA) pain and is administered in-clinic by your doctor or trained technician. It is a highly specific protein targeting molecules involved in the disease and functions like naturally occurring antibodies—it is eliminated via normal protein degradation pathways, with minimal involvement of the liver or kidneys.

What does this mean for your pet? The use of NSAIDS generally involve annual to semi annual bloodwork in order to monitor liver and kidney function. As Solensia has not been shown to effect the values of either organ that means that you can forego the diagnostics and allow you and your pet to get back to living life normally.
