We’re sure that many of you have begun to see major news outlets reports on cases of a rare respiratory infection occurring in dogs that lead highly social lifestyles. Despite what may be being reported in the media, the cases that are being seen ARE NOT originating from a new, mysterious virus. The cases that are being reported are in what is known as “Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) and while not as common as Influenza or Bordetella it does pop up from time to time. Currently in the state of New Jersey while we’re still seeing cases of kennel cough and pneumonia it is thankfully nothing that is out of the ordinary for this time of year. At WVC we understand the groundswell of concern being voiced by pet parents and hope to provide further information regarding the issue and suggestions on preventing infection.

Signs and symptoms of CIRDC include coughing, labored breathing, fever, decreased appetite, sneezing, lethargy and discharge from their eyes and nose. As with most respiratory illnesses the two main methods of prevention are isolation from other dogs that do not share your house and ensuring that your dogs are vaccinated against other respiratory illnesses. If you suspect that your dog may be exhibiting any of the listed symptoms contact WVC and make an appointment with your preferred Vet as soon as possible.
